The federal Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) and the University of Michigan co-hosted a Research Community Forum, "Reducing Regulatory Burden: Real Strategies for Real Change," on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at UM-Ann Arbor The conference focused on using the flexibility within human research regulations, proposed regulatory changes, novel approaches to Institutional Review Board (IRB) activities, and decreasing regulatory burdens for researchers and IRBs. The target audience included investigators, research staff, research coordinators, Institutional Review Board (IRB) members, coordinators and staff, institutional officials, institutional administrators, legal counsel, public health officials, privacy officers, compliance officers, and patient advocates. Invited speakers and panelists shared ideas from a wide range of public and private institutions. In addition, representatives from the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), other federal agencies, the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP) and the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) provided updates and participated in open forum discussions.
